Some people have to pretend you’re a bad person, so they don’t feel guilty about the things they did to you. – Anonymous

What factors impact the way certain people respond to situations?

Many factors in our lives may impact how we respond to certain situations. Our social identities may play a role in how we present ourselves and what rights are granted to us. The environment that we’re in may foster our social identities or use them against us, and therefore, we must respond accordingly. These places may be so against treating certain people with dignity and respect that they will go the extra mile to lie about them in hopes that others will perceive them as imbeciles incapable of cohabitating with others in those environments.

Why do some people not have a voice and others do?

Gender identity, sexual identity, sexual orientation, age, and racial identity, among other identities, may influence the right of some people to be seen and heard. When setting boundaries, some people may be perceived as not respecting the needs of others. When stating their preferences, some people may be perceived as being difficult. When contributing ideas, some people may be perceived as problematic. It is hard to know what to do in places that claim to foster belongingness yet punish certain people for asking for the things others would ask for themselves.

So how do you stay true to yourself in a world that finds ways to silence you?

Understand that there is a lot of lip service out there. It has nothing to do with you. Do your best, and forget how those people perceive you. Always find ways to self-validate (e.g., surround yourself with people who truly care about your well-being). Don’t be afraid to make decisions that will enhance your well-being (e.g., minimizing contact, removing yourself from the environment, or ending a relationship).

With an open heart,
