"Imperfections are not inadequacies; they are reminders that we're all in this together."Brene Brown

Dearest Proteas,

How do you overcome perfectionism?

Some people can be highly self-critical to the point that they do not recognize their achievements or successes. These people may fail to see that they have the qualities and characteristics others desire. To overcome the perfectionist mentality, it is necessary to understand that being different is what makes people. We cannot have a homogenous world. Our differences make us unique and, therefore, the world around us more stimulating.

Why do we want what others have?

Maybe because other people seem perfect; however, some people do not show their struggles because they fear being perceived as imperfect. For example, some people spend numerous hours editing photos or video recordings to show perfection. At the same time, other people view these pictures and videos without seeing the struggles behind closed doors. People want what other people have because they cannot see the battles conquered behind closed doors.

How do you embrace your imperfections?

Some people forget that we all move at our own pace. Just because someone has not achieved something doesn't make one a failure. Remember, no one is perfect. Remind yourself that you have overcome many things. Many didn't have to go through the things that you went through, be proud of yourself. The idea of perfection is flawed. The perfection mentally sets some people up for failure and provides difficulty for some people to overcome imperfection.

How do you, as the reader, overcome imperfection (perfectionism)? We welcome your comments.
